Fuge Imaginea 104
Fuge Imaginea 104 is a remarkable anthology. Produced in 1979 by Miamon Miller, it was recognized then for the breadth of its reach and the remarkable abilities of those participating. Miamon, a violinist and an expert in Eastern European folk music (particularly that of Romania) and also a lover of Mexican styles, drew upon the expertise of his friends and colleagues throughout Los Angeles. Most prominently featured are vocalist, Michael Janusz and the Veracruz 'conjunto' Nuevo Papaloapan. The Bulgarian village band, Pitu Guli recorded one wonderful dance tune, while ethnologist and polyglot, Dick Crum, who shouted verses (strigături) with perfect Romanian regional styling is featured in another from Transylvania.
Nearly 20 musicians participated in this remarkable project. The repertoire on the LP was drawn from Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Poland, the Ukraine and Mexico. This CD re-release includes 4 tracks not on the original LP: two canciones ("Cartas Marcadas" and "La Palma") from Mexico played and sung by Nuevo Papaloapan; the Yiddish song "Oy Mame Schlog Mikt Nikt" with Michael Janusz; and a Romanian dance tune from the region of Oaș. Fuge Imaginea 105
Fuge Imaginea 105 was recorded in 1986 and features four extraordinary musicians playing the high energy and lyrical cabaret and folk music of Eastern Europe. Miamon Miller (violin) leads vocalist Michael Alpert, Alek Eppler (cimbalom) and bassist Stuart Brotman on an excursion that rambles from the hills of Slavonia to the mountains of Transylvania, from the plains of Oltenia to the bistros of Belgrade.
In the mid 1980s, Fuge Imaginea toured from coast to coast, and during its short life helped pave the way for the many world music groups that followed. This recording, originally released on cassette, reflects why the group was able to create an audience even when the genre was far from mainstream. Highlights include Michael’s improvisation of verses for Slavonsko, Stuart’s tilinca (flute without finger holes) rendition of “Pe Loc” from Bartók’s Romanian Dances (arranged by Miamon) and Alek’s cimbalom playing in our Oltenian Suite. As Jon Pareles said in a New York Times review (June, 1985): “Fuge Imaginea’s horas, doinas and ballads roll along on the resonant tones of Alexander Eppler’s cimbalom and Stuart Brotman’s bowed bass, and are topped by Miamon Miller’s ornately romantic violin improvisations or Michael Alpert’s accomplished singing... Fuge Imaginea is versatile, and careful about its idioms.” From the first cimbalom arpeggio to the final cadence of “Evo Banke,” discover for yourself what made this group so special.
